2014 Winter Olympic Games – Sochi, Russia

The Winter Olympics begin February 7 and end February 23, 2014

History of previous Winter Olympic medals and winners for researching and graphing is found at http://www.sochi2014.com/en/medal-history?year=2010. There is a dropdown menu from other olympics.

Mascots (younger students): http://talisman.sochi2014.com/en/#/   This link has some cute videos that tell amusing stories about animals of the region. The audio is in Russian with closed caption in English or French.                          Lesson Ideas:

  • have students find another animal from the region and create their own mascot and write a story of how it was chosen (reading & writing)

  • research the actual mascot animal and its habitat in Russia (reading & writing, science)

  • make an infographic of the various mascots with images (tech class)

  • list the particular character traits of each mascot; compare and contrast (writing)

  • draw/create a unique mascot with detail (art)

  • research mascots from all the Winter Olympics, a menu is available (history, writing)
